Best Netbook to buy in India

Best Netbook to buy in India
Netbook, as already covered in this blog, is sleeker, lighter, cheaper version of full size
laptops that even come at half the price tag.
Most famous size being 10 inches, as per latest survey, market share of netbook is increasing and that of full size laptop is decreasing. There are a hoarde of netbooks
being launched in US and other markets on Oct22, in sync with the launch of Windows 7, but coming them to India will still take sometime.
As of now, there are many international best buy and bestseller netbooks availabe in India, as of October 2009.
After going through configuration, user reviews, editor reviews, videos across best of the market websites, here is my take on best buy netbooks.
Depending upon your budget, look preference, batter life preference, you could select between any of these: Asus 1005HA, Samsung N110, Samsung N120, Samsung NC20, Dell 10V, Toshiba NB200, MSI Wind, HP mini, Lenovo ideapad S10 (not in that preference order)
Now, to be specific, the best choice would be between ASUS 1005HA and Samsung N120.
Both being best sellers internationally (1005HA winning editor’s choice award by CNET,
and also maintaining No.1 Spot on Amazon in this category).
A close fight would be with N120. Difference being, 1005HA offers a little better battery life, and in some parameters it performs a little better than N120 Atom processor.
N120 holds advantage in its full size keyboard (best in market across all 10 inch netbooks), nice looks, and Samsung being better established in India in terms of after sales than Asus.
Price wise, Asus 1005HA comes at Rs. 21,500 in Delhi (as of Oct-09) and Samsung N120 coming at Rs. 22,500 (and as part of diwali offer giving away DVD Writer free with any Netbook).
Under fully loaded conditions 1005HA offers around 30 min more back up than N120 (around 5 hours 51 minutes, at lesser load both give around 8 hours back up)
N110 is a bit lower version of N120, not much differences, but it offers better battery backup than N120.
Dell offers good customer service/support, offers good hardware, but still has to come with a winning netbook, though its Dell Mini 9 was a bestseller (phased out now), and its present Dell 10 does a decent enough job.
Lenovo ideapad S12, as available in India, is not as par with its latest product s12, present in US and other markets, but is decent enough.
Same with Toshiba, in Indian market it has NB200, which is not at par with internationally available product NB-205 (which ranks higher than Samsung N120 in many reviews).
MSI Wind has been a bestseller in initial launches, but competition has taken the better of it and it has yet to come up with another bestseller.
Also, it is to be noted that currently all netbooks come loaded with Windows XP, now Windows 7 (as sought out to be best Microsoft OS yet), should come loaded after 22October with most of the coming netbooks, it makes sense to enquire about free upgrade options before you buy any netbook.
One more important thing is launch of Nvidia Ion platform for netbooks, enabling it even to play games and view HD content. HP Mini 311 is the first to feature it, but is not available in India yet, and when it comes, expect it to push the prices by at least 5-10K.
(in US thought it would cost around 20,000 after converting to Indian currency), so if you can get some netbook from US, it would be much better value for money and better hardware than what is available in India. (though that is the case with most of the electronics product).
Will keep updating about the latest!!!! Feedback is welcome.

HTC Hero comes to India – Awesome

October 16, 2009 eduface Leave a comment

Oh well, for those who love touch screen, this phone is going to be a treat. And HTC guyz didn’t waste any time in launching this in India as well after much hyped launch in US. This phone boasts of great looks, great UI interface, great for social networking lovers and even great for those who love Android platform as OS. And yeah for iPhone haters it offers a great option.

To give an overview, iPhone 3G has failed in India, or at least very close to fail. It doesn’t offer a few features which most of the consumers here feel a must have. No Sms forwarding, not even 5 MP camera, no radio, lot of features that require phone to be unlocked (extra money), monthly internet services cost heavily from airtel/vodafone, all this when you are paying more than 30K for a phone? To add to the irony, iPhone recently announced great cuts in its price in US, which again is not applicable for India!!! Its strong point, surfing internet over 3G and a lot of apps will not be useful as there is no 3G in India yet (spectrum woes still continue). And if we listen to a lot of users in US, they now are getting bored with iPhone OS, as there are not much customizing options, every iPhone looks exactly the same as the other one!! Its a huge minus for some people.

And then there comes HTC touch, fully featured touch phone, offers very high customizing options (facebook/twitter/in-built youtube appln), and power of Android OS, which beyond any doubt holds a wonderful future, it also has 5MP camera, 3.5mm earphone jack, style-wise and look-wise it leaves iPhone behind, and it is available right away in Indian market (again around 30K price band), has radio FM. Its new SenseUI is amazing to use.

As per gizmodo, its teflon coating makes iPhone look like a junk. Also, this year it beats iPhone in T3 gadget awards, for the first time in years some phone has done that. Above all, it offers multitasking, so you could be browsing 5 things at a time, reading twitter updates, checking latest score, checking mail, which you can’t yet do on iPhone, you need to do 1 thing at a time.

Though, it doesn’t offer a matching hardware to support a really good OS, still it offers a great piece and a great alternative to iPhone. But one thing is sure you would love showing it off in public ;)

Dealers in India can be found on HTC website.

As per press statement by HTC on launch:

“The HTC Hero will be available at a market operating price of Rs. 34,600/- in Maharashtra and Rs. 31,990/- in the Rest of India at all leading authorised HTC resellers across the country.”

Kindle goes international: Bye bye print media

October 10, 2009 eduface Leave a comment

For people who love reading, be it newspapers, magazines, novels.. switching from print media to e-reading would be a delight, especially when you can carry 10.4″ x 7.2″ x 0.38″ gadget, that could eliminate carrying 3500 books!!!

This is what Amazon’s Kindle offers us, and that is the reason it has been quite a phenomenon already in US. And now, it has taken a step ahead, as expected and launched this great product internationally, in more than 70 countries. So now, you will get all your fav stuff delivered directly to you wirelessly..how cool is that!  This is just the right gift (if you could afford one, to be sold around $279, and wireless subscription also to cost monthly) for avid readers.

Sony and few other big names have already jumped into this business which is supposed to generate $700 million as per revenue estimates by citibank.

More updates on this would follow soon.

Sound of Music – Lots to Choose from

October 4, 2009 eduface Leave a comment

For audiophiles and for those who can’t live without music, at any cost, there is a lot to choose from the market depending upon your budget and how comfortable you are with certain type of headphones/earphones.

Bose, Seeinheiser, Audio Technica, Shure, Klipsch, Grado, Sony, Etymotic, Jabra, Beyer, V-moda, Denon, AKG and of course for gaming enthusiasts steelseries comes up with good pairs. Though many of them are still not available in India, but still there is a good amount of quality headphones present in Indian market.

For low budget, high quality in-ear earbuds, Creative EP 630 rules the market, I own this one too, and it has been with me for more than 2 years now. It can’t get better than this in this price. (Bought it for Rs. 800 (indian price), current price lingers around Rs. 600) and in headphone category Sennheiser PX 100 is the one to look out for (around Rs. 2200)

Good quality pairs can go on from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1 Lakh!! (note Grado Wooden finish pairs)

Look out in this section for detailed  and upto date analysis.

We have seen this market growing by leaps and bounds. iPhone has set such a trend that is still very much a bechmark for top companies to breach. HTC, Blackberry, Palm, Nokia, Sony, Samsung are trying really hard to catch up.

Recently release HTC Hero, Palm Pre and Blackberry Bold/Storm try their level best to steal some of the iPhone Customers, and is bound to get bigger with the launch of Nokia N 900.

We will put here all the exciting features and how is iPhone still managing to be on the top.

Netbooks – The next big thing

For the people who are new to this term, a netbook is a lower version of notebook, that caters to all daily browsing stuff, and with new ION graphics capabilites, it has started catering to high definition videos and gaming enthusiasts as well. They are less than half the price, weight, look stylish, great battery life, and very easy to carry.

We will here analyze best of market. Will be updated soon. For now, HP Mini 311 is my favorite. More on this soon.
